A man is behind bars accused of stealing a 24-tonne bulldozer and taking it on a drunken rampage, leaving wrecked vehicles, street furniture, and road surfaces in his wake

A 41-year-old man now faces a lengthy prison sentence after “drink driving” a bulldozer over a dual carriageway and a city centre. His joyride only ended after he’d smashed through a Royal Mail lorry, reports Metro.

Officers were alerted to reports that the construction vehicle had been stolen from an address in Stafford. But the thief then tore off in the earthmover to Wolverhampton, heading down Bridgnorth Road, Compton Road West, and even onto the A4150 dual carriageway. By late Saturday afternoon, his trail of destruction included street furniture and road surfaces. The bulldozer was at last brought to a halt on New Road in Willenhall at 8.15pm.

Charlene Harris, 47, who filmed the incident, was at a pub when she saw crowds rush out to a commotion outside.

She told Metro: “When we came out, it looked like the police were stopping the Royal Mail van, but then we realised a copper was driving it.

“It was being used to block the road. The police were shouting at everyone to keep away – and then we got word that a bulldozer was coming down from Willenhall.

‘The bulldozer got through the lorry easily. We couldn’t believe what was going on. The amount of police trying to stop it was unbelievable.”

The man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, dangerous driving, threat to damage or destroy property, theft, failure to stop, taking a conveyance without consent, and using threatening, abusive or insulting words and behaviour to cause harassment.

He remains in custody while inquiries continue.

While this rampage achieved an epic level of destruction, a bulldozer isn’t the largest vehicle to get taken on an illegal journey.

A 12-year-old boy recently took a bus on a 5-hour joyride in Singapore, covering 100 km while only causing minor scratches to the vehicle.

The bus company A&S Transit released a full statement after the incident asking everyone to be kind. “He’s still young,” a spokesperson told a local news network.
