Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by 10-man Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, with Ruben Amorim’s side slipping to their first Premier League defeat since September
Manchester United suffered their first Premier League loss since 27 September, falling to a 10-man Everton at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were stymied by a resolute Toffees defence, even after Idrissa Gana Gueye was sent off in the 13th minute for an odd incident where he slapped his own team-mate, Michael Keane, in the face.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall put the visitors ahead with a curling shot on the half-hour mark. United tried desperately to capitalise on their numerical advantage but their attack was lacklustre, managing only six shots on target throughout the match.
The defeat brings an end to a five-match unbeaten streak in the league and sees Ruben Amorim’s side miss the opportunity to draw level with fourth-placed Aston Villa.
Daily Star Sport provides ratings for the United players…
Senne Lammens, 5 – Had his first shaky moment in a United shirt with the Dewsbury-Hall goal which he could have defended better. Otherwise solid, but that shot was the game decider, reports the Express.
Leny Yoro, 5 – Made a crucial headed clearance from an Iliman Ndiaye cross early on but was then easily outplayed by Dewsbury-Hall for the goal. Pushed forward to provide extra support in the second half attack, but most of his passes were sideways.
Matthijs de Ligt, 6 – A tad slow in closing down Dewsbury-Hall for his goal, but certainly not the main culprit. Seemed a bit unsteady on the defensive front, but delivered a superb pass to Mount that led to a Bruno Fernandes opportunity and a decent cross for a Joshua Zirkzee header. Had a good chance in stoppage time but leaned back as he shot at goal, resulting in an easy save.
Luke Shaw, 4 – The left-back’s reluctance to attack more in the second half left Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville exasperated. A rather subdued performance from Shaw.
Noussar Mazroaui, 5 – Failed to unsettle a sturdy Everton defence and was substituted at half-time as a result. A somewhat unfortunate casualty, to be honest.
Casemiro, 5 – His foul on Jack Grealish, which earned him a booking, was about the only significant contribution he made before being substituted. However, he wasn’t as poor as some of his colleagues.
Bruno Fernandes, 5 – Caught napping defensively for the Everton goal. Came close to levelling the score a few times, including with two long-range attempts, one saved by Jordan Pickford and another just over the bar. However, he made a strange decision to shoot with the outside of his right boot at one point. If he’d used his left, he might have equalised with plenty of time left to find a winner.
Patrick Dorgu, 4 – It was a night to forget for the Dane. He squandered a golden opportunity to level the score at 1-1, 33 minutes in with a hasty shot and his decision-making was subpar throughout. He was replaced by Diogo Dalot, who isn’t particularly strong in attack.
Bryan Mbeumo, 5 – He forced a decent save in the second half but it wasn’t his finest performance overall. Everton managed him well. However, he was still one of the few United players who looked like they might make something happen. Booked.
Amad Diallo, 6 – Diallo seemed one of the most likely United players to create an opportunity but was shifted to a right wing-back position by Ruben Amorim at half-time. Despite this, he remained one of the home side’s standout performers, making several good passes to try and force the issue, but lacked a decisive final product.
Joshua Zirkzee, 4 – Zirkzee offered little in attack for the majority of the match. His rating was saved from a 3/10 by a header destined for the bottom corner that Pickford had to stretch to push wide of the post. He forced another save from Pickford with a late header.
Substitutes:
Mason Mount (for Mazroaui 46), 6 – Mount boosted United’s attacking threat with a few shots on goal, although none seriously tested Pickford.
Kobbie Mainoo (for Casemiro 58), 5 – Mainoo received a huge cheer when he came on but failed to really get into the game.
Diogo Dalot (for Dorgu 58), 5 – Dalot was brought on as a left-sided wing-back. He’s not the wing-back you’d want when you’re chasing a goal.
