Comedian and TV star Peter Kay, 52, opened up about his struggles with nerves and introversion during an appearance on BBC Radio 2 with presenter Scott Mills

Peter Kay has opened up about donning a “mask” whilst candidly revealing his struggles with nerves both on and off stage.

The star, 52, made an appearance on Scott Mills’ BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show this morning, where he confessed to feeling anxious about meeting the radio presenter as he spoke about his worries.

Despite his massive success as a stand-up performer, Peter acknowledged that showbusiness and radio interviews ‘isn’t his comfort zone’ when questioned by Scott, 51, regarding his nervousness.

Peter, who made a rare television appearance last night, disclosed that he often ‘wears a mask’ during his live performances. Following DJ Scott Mills’ admission about his own job-related anxieties and introverted nature, Peter revealed: “I can’t fathom it either at all. You know what, I think because when I do the shows I am, I thought it sounds a bit pretentious, I’m wearing some kind of a mask. I don’t mean literally. But I mean, but yeah, at the same time, it is very much how I am.

“So, I am introverted, but it’s not a million miles from where I am as a person. It’s not like you’re putting on an act. If I bumped into you in the street, you’d be exactly, oh, you were at home and you’re introverted, you’d probably be exactly the same. But you just feel quieter. Not miserable.”

The duo also concurred that whilst they can entertain millions of people, they would find it challenging to perform the same way in front of a smaller audience. Peter explained: “I don’t know why that is. Again, not miserable. Just not quite comfortable about it.”

Later in the conversation, Peter disclosed about his stand-up: “I always loved making people happy, I still do…it sounds like a cliché but it’s a vocation. I knew I liked making people laugh, but there’s no chance I’ll ever be able to do that as a living.”

Peter, who appeared virtually unrecognisable during his appearance on The One Show yesterday, has revealed an extension of his UK arena tour. This time, proceeds are being donated to 12 cancer charities, reports the Mirror.

The tour, which launched in 2022, has been continually extended due to incredible demand. And whilst it’s broken records, Peter confirmed these dates will be his final ones.

He told Scott Mills: “I honestly, I’m not milking it, I do love it but you’ve got to have summat to say!” He jested he wasn’t pulling an Elton John or Torvill and Dean by prolonging his tour as he maintained: “These really are the last dates”, before quipping about the skating pair Torvill and Dean: “Oh I’m not that bad, they’ve retired about 10 times!”

This follows Peter’s comments about his tour on yesterday’s The One Show: “It’s finishing next year, and I am announcing the last lot of shows, but all profits are going to cancer charities.

“They’re all 12 cancer charities which are, Children with cancer, UK Teenage cancer trust, Kidney Cancer UK, Blood Cancer UK, Bowel Cancer UK, Prostate UK, DKMS, Ovarian Cancer Action, Pancreatic Cancer UK, Anthony Nolan, the brain tumour charity, and Breast Cancer UK.”

He further stated: “Unfortunately, everybody knows someone who’s been affected on that list, and I just hope people support it. Come to the shows, that’s why I’m here. You don’t even have to like me, it goes beyond that. This is about supporting those charities.”
