Jay Slater’s mum has slammed a new video taken by one of the last people to see her son alive, as the man has returned to Tenerife and posted the clip online
Jay Slater’s mum has slammed a disturbing new video filmed by one of the final people to see her son – shot outside the exact cottage where he was last spotted alive.
Debbie Duncan branded the footage, captured by Stephen Roccas – nicknamed Rocky – as “sick” following a wave of backlash the Brit has endured this week for sharing it online. He has travelled back to Tenerife, where Jay perished in June 2024, and filmed the nine-second clip outside the holiday rental in Masca, a remote mountainous region of the island.
Wearing a West Ham football shirt, Roccas sweeps across the identical mountain panorama Jay, 19, witnessed before he disappeared, accompanied solely by the caption: “Views” – along with two fire emojis and one of a mountain. This comes barely six weeks after Stephen refused to provide testimony at Jay’s inquest, which delivered a verdict of accidental death.
Multiple attempts were made to serve Stephen with a witness summons but he chose not to participate.
The man has encountered additional criticism over the video. One social media user commented: “What ya trying to prove Rocky? This is bad taste?” whilst another remarked: “This is a bit sick.”, reports the Mirror.
Responding to the video, Ms Duncan said: “What is he trying to do? Rub our noses in it? Why has he even gone back there? What for? What’s he trying to prove? I don’t understand it.
“I would love to ask him some questions but I can’t as the inquest is over and it’s all done. But I really would like to know why he’s back there. I hope people start asking questions of him. The last year has been hell for us.”
Last summer, Jay had been invited to the Airbnb by Stephen and convicted drug dealer Ayub Qassim, 31, and spent the evening with them at the remote rental in Masca.
The following morning, Jay, a trainee bricklayer, disappeared into the rugged terrain – a ravine where rescue teams discovered his remains nearly a month afterwards.
Ms Duncan voiced her outrage at the fresh footage, which depicts the isolated countryside where her son went missing.
She implied that Stephen is attempting “to rub our (her family’s) noses in it” roughly 14 months following the tragedy.
In contrast to Stephen, Ayub did turn up for the inquest at Preston Crown Court.
Regarding Stephen, Coroner Dr James Adeley had stated: “He is doing this of his own volition. As he is abroad, I cannot compel him to give evidence.”
It’s understood that officers tried to serve Stephen with a witness summons at multiple addresses in London and Manchester, but were unsuccessful in tracking him down.
