Incredible pictures taken by an urban explorer show the control room of an abandoned chemical plant left untouched for more than two decades. The fascinating images show the site left almost exactly as it was the day it shut down, with computer monitors, keyboards, instruction books, files full of paper, and even tables and chairs sitting under a thick covering of dust.
The machinery in the control room looks like a throwback to a pre-digital age, with chunky physical dials, knobs, and switches, along with countless dials and gauges. The off-white computer monitors will be familiar to those of us who grew up before the turn of the century, as will the old-style telephones in stylish grey and purple.
Photographs taken outside show train tracks leading to the site, as well as a set of large pipes running through woodland. Another picture shows a view of complex web of pipes outside the factory, in an undisclosed location in the UK.
On their visit to the site, the urban explorer wrote: “After an epic trek through the forest, swamps, abandoned train tracks and barren wasteland we finally reached our target. This control room used to power a massive power plant. Now sitting eerily quiet for over 20 years.”
Responding to a request for more information, they added: “It was a chemical plant. Used to make ‘Soda Ash’ (carbonate soda).
“Most of the plant was knocked down and rebuilt with a more modern plant nearby but the control room building and a few others remain. Think they may be listed so can’t be knocked down.”
Carbonate soda is used in a range of processes, including glass manufacturing and water treatment. It is also used in laundry detergents and stain removers, and as an ingredient in some foods.
Reddit users were amazed by the images. One wrote: “Looks pretty clean for over 20 years abandoned. Great find OP (original poster)!”
The person who posted the images replied: “No vandalism due to its location. Quite a trek to get to and location not very well known. Thanks!”
Another commenter wrote: “Very cool! I’m based in the UK but have never heard mention of this place. It’s so well preserved.”
Someone else said: “I’m surprised anything like this in its current condition exists in the UK, awesome find and great pictures.”
And another wrote: “Always nice to see a place which has been abandoned so long without any vandalism.”
One user compared the images to the Fallout series of video games, in which players explore an irradiated wasteland in the aftermath of a nuclear war. They wrote: “Looks straight of a Fallout game.”
The user who posted it replied: “Funnily enough, that is exactly how my son described it when we were there (I explore with him)! He also said it was like playing Rust (whatever that is!)” Rust is another video game in which players explore a deserted island teeming with dangers.
