A two-year-old boy has died after a car ploughed into pedestrians in Whitstable, Kent, on Saturday evening – a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving

A large emergency service response was called to the junction of Harbour Street and Cromwell Road in Whitstable on Saturday evening (August 16).

A tragic incident has occurred in Whitstable, where a two year old child was fatally injured after a car ploughed into several pedestrians. The emergency services, including police and paramedics, were called to the scene at the crossroads of Harbour Street and Cromwell Road, at 8.24pm on Saturday, August 16.

Kent Police officers were joined by teams from the South East Coast Ambulance Service. Three ambulances were dispatched to the scene, along with two critical care paramedics. Three individuals were attended to at the site – an adult male, an adult female and the young child. A spokesperson for the police stated: “A man suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

“A two-year-old child was sadly confirmed deceased at the scene. His next of kin has been informed.

“A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene for causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody whilst enquiries continue.”, reports Kent Live.

Investigators from Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now appealing for anyone with pertinent information to step forward as investigations are carried out.

Witnesses, including passengers travelling on the bus who have not yet spoken to police, should call 01622 798538 or email sciu. td@kent.pnn. police. uk, quoting reference BN/AL/058/25. Relevant CCTV and dashcam footage can be uploaded via Kent Police’s online portal.

An onlooker in Whitstable revealed details about the aftermath of the collision, according to KentOnline. She said: “A nice young man approached us and advised us not to take the children to where we had parked as something had happened.

“My granddaughter said she could see a car had gone through the barrier. And when my husband came back with the car, he said lots of people were crying.”

Canterbury City Council, which operates the Gorrell Tank car park, has also said its “thoughts are with everyone affected” by the shocking incident.

The council has now reopened the car park and said officers were on site today to “offer help and support”.

While investigations are ongoing, it has been confirmed that Kent Police arrested a man in his 20s, who was detained at the scene for causing death by dangerous driving.

The suspect still remains in custody as authorities have launched their investigations, with calls to locals to send over any dashcam footage or witness accounts.
