Misfits, which won a BAFTA for best drama, may not have led to lasting success for all of its stars, but it served as a major springboard for some cast members
Channel 4 show Misfits scooped a BAFTA for best drama, but didn’t necessarily pave the way to enduring success for all its stars. Despite being off-air for over a decade, it continues to attract new followers thanks to its availability on streaming platforms like Channel 4’s library.
The show proved to be a significant springboard for some of its cast, catapulting them to Hollywood fame and roles in major television series.
Misfits centred around a group of young offenders carrying out community service. All was going well until a peculiar electrical storm gifted them with extraordinary powers, from telepathy to time travel.
Now, time travelling forward a few years, Daily Star takes a look at what happened to the cast.
Robert Sheehan – Nathan
Robert quickly became one of the standout stars of the show, portraying the character of Nathan. Initially immortal, Nathan was revealed to have disappeared to Vegas just before the third series.
Since then, he’s appeared in Killing Bono alongside Ben Barnes on the silver screen, BBC One drama Accused, and the second series of Sky Atlantic’s Fortitude.
His most notable role to date has been as the endearing Klaus in Netflix’s Umbrella Academy. The show was a massive hit, with the final season released last year.
During the Covid lockdown, he turned his hand to writing fiction and now has a book published.
The star confessed that he sought solace in meditation after experiencing the “most miserable time of his life” a few years back, and has since extended apologies to several of his ex-partners for his past “selfish” behaviour.
Iwan Rheon – Simon
Iwan Rheon, who played Simon, shot to fame with his chilling portrayal of Ramsay Bolton in Game Of Thrones. His involvement in the show’s graphic rape scenes sparked controversy, which he described to Metro as “the worst day of my career”.
Despite missing out on the role of Jon Snow to Kit Harington, the two actors maintained a friendly rapport. In Misfits, Rheon’s character Simon possessed the power of invisibility, exiting the series at the end of the third season.
His acting portfolio also includes BBC One’s Our Girl, ITV sitcom Vicious, Urban Myths where he played a young Adolf Hitler, and the role of Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars in the film The Dirt.
He and his actress partner Zoe Grisedale welcomed their first child in August 2018, but they separated in 2023.
Nathan Stewart-Jarrett – Curtis
Nathan Stewart-Jarrett brought to life the character of Curtis in Misfits, a character gifted with the ability to manipulate time. After his stint on Misfits, he appeared in a C4 series titled Utopia and shared the stage with Andrew Garfield in Angels in America.
In 2014, he made an appearance in the music video for Years and Years’ track Real. In 2019, Stewart-Jarrett took centre stage in Mope, a distinctive crime film exploring the life of adult film actor Steve Driver.
Most recently, he secured a leading role in the Disney+ series Culprits and appeared in Netflix spy series Black Doves.
Antonia Thomas – Alisha
Antonia brought the character of Alisha to life until the end of series three. She subsequently featured in music videos for Coldplay and Stereophonics, before landing the leading role in Netflix’s Lovesick.
One of her most notable parts came as Dr Claire Browne in the American medical drama The Good Doctor, which attracted an audience of 20 million viewers. Antonia also secured a role in Channel 4’s Suspect alongside James Nesbitt and Richard E Grant, which broadcast earlier in 2022.
Joseph Gilgun – Rudy
Joseph Gilgun took on the role of Rudy Wade, becoming the first of several cast shake-ups as Nathan’s “replacement”, bringing a character with multiple personalities to life.
Gilgun, recognised for his work in This Is England and films including Pride and The Last Witch Hunter, later appeared in Preacher, portraying the drug-addicted vampire Cassidy. Show bosses considered him “perfect” for the role.
Joseph went on to create, executive produce, and star in Sky’s Brassic with Michelle Keegan. The final season is due to air this autumn.
He has been candid about his battle with bipolar disorder in various interviews and podcasts, disclosing that numerous Brassic scenes drew from his personal experiences.
Gilgun also appeared in The Infiltrator alongside Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, and maintains strong friendships with many of his This Is England colleagues.
Lauren Socha – Kelly
Lauren Socha, who initially scooped a BAFTA for her portrayal of Kelly in Misfits, saw her storyline come to an abrupt halt following her conviction for aggravated assault. She didn’t return for the programme’s fourth series, in what was termed a “mutual decision”.
Nevertheless, Lauren bounced back with appearances in ITV2’s Plebs, C4’s Catastrophe and BBC’s The Other One.
She also featured alongside Michelle Keegan in Strangeways Here We Come. Lauren’s elder brother Michael is equally established as an actor, with credits including This is England, BBC’s Time and Chernobyl.
In 2016, she revealed on Twitter that she had welcomed a baby daughter.
