Ruben Amorim has made a major decision on the future of Rasmus Hojlund ahead of the Premier League opener against Arsenal as transfer speculation grows
Rasmus Hojlund is reportedly set to be left out of Manchester United’s squad to face Arsenal.
Hojlund faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford following the signing of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £73.7million. The Denmark striker has been told he faces a challenge to get minutes under Ruben Amorim this season.
According to The Athletic, Hojlund will not be part of the matchday squad to take on the Gunners in the Premier League opener on Sunday.
The 22-year-old has attracted interest from a number of European clubs, namely AC Milan and Leipzig, but he has so far remained insistent on staying at Old Trafford and fighting for his place.
Hojlund was an unused substitute in United’s final pre-season friendly last weekend against Fiorentina.
And Amorim did little to convince that the Dane was set to be a part of his plans this season as he avoided committing to the striker in his press conference on Friday.
He said: “He’s one more option, we will see. We are focused on this game and Rasmus is still our player.”
United’s preference is a permanent sale for Hojlund, but there is an acceptance that they will have to settle for a lower amount than his book value of £45m, and potentially accept a loss in the eyes of FFP to move him on this summer.
Commenting on his future during pre-season, Hojlund said: “I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens.
“Competition is fine with me, it sharpens me. I’m more than ready. I’m feeling sharp so I’m welcoming everything that comes.”
Hojlund joined United in a deal worth up to £72m from Atalanta in 2023, but he found the net just 26 times in 95 appearances, including only four in the Premier League last season.
