The Kremlin was thrilled to have taken out one of Ukraine’s warships as the horrific war between the two goes on, but Kyiv had another trick up its sleeve as it retaliated
Ukraine has got its revenge after Russia destroyed one of its key warships. It came following a devastating blow from a Moscow-flown drone hit.
Fighting between Russia and Ukraine is slowly grinding on while world leaders scramble to get both Kyiv and Moscow to agree to a ceasefire. Hopes for Ukraine have been raised thanks to the support from Western leaders, but Vladimir Putin poured cold water on the possibility of ceasefire from his side.
As a result, the deadly fighting is only continuing as more and more soldiers continue to head to the frontline. This does not include just land, however, as the Black Sea has also seen some ferocious battles between the two nations over the course of the war.
In footage released from both the Kremlin and Ukraine, ships were involved on both sides in the latest set of skirmishes. However, things reached new heights when a Russian drone made a direct hit on a Ukrainian warship, severely damaging it.
Ukraine, however, was quick to fire its own missiles in retaliation, managing to strike one of the Russian dictator’s most prized vessels, according to the Sun. It was later revealed that the ships were armed with lethal Kalibr cruise missiles, which would have caused even more damage to Kyiv’s fleet.
During the fighting, one Ukrainian sailor was killed in the strike, while others were left wounded on the 180ft tanker named Simferopol, named after a city in the occupied region of Crimea. It was revealed that the strikes took place in the Ukrainian section of the Danube estuary just after midnight on Friday (August 29).
The Simferopol – which usually has a crew of around 29 on board – eventually capsized, with Kyiv confirming the heartbreaking news shortly afterwards. In a statement, spokesperson for Ukraine’s navy Dmitry Pletenchuk confirmed that the “vast majority” of the crew were safe and well.
It is believed that Russia fired the drones at the boat from its military base in Crimea, which is annexed from Ukraine in 2014. However, the explosion did mark a grim new milestone for the war this was the first time that Russia was able to destroy a Ukrainian vessel using marine drones.
But Ukraine would eventually have its revenge, as it released dramatic footage of a strike on one of the Kremlin’s most-beloved ships. Huge plumes of smoke were seen bellowing after the aerial drone struck the Buyan M ship in the Sea of Azov on Ukraine’s eastern coast.
After the hit, Kyiv confirmed in a press conference that the ship was not completely destroyed. However, they did say it was effectively rendered useless for Moscow’s brutal war effort.
Military analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko said of the incident: “Despite the fact that the ship did not receive fatal damage, it will not be able to perform combat missions for a long time.” The moves come after Putin was slammed once again by leaders after targeting the British Council building in Kyiv in his latest barrage of attacks on the city.
Western leaders hit out at Putin for delaying an end to the war, while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the attacks were a “sabotage of peace”. He added: “Putin is killing children and civilians; this bloodshed must end.”
