Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood had his eyes on the prize at the Tour Championship, but one spectator had other ideas as they attempted to steal the show
British golfer Tommy Fleetwood confessed he was battling his own nerves down the back nine at the Tour Championship as the struggling player finally secured his maiden PGA triumph after 164 attempts.
Footage reveals that Fleetwood perhaps faced more distractions than just his inner demons as he pursued victory. Whilst playing the 18th hole during Sunday’s final round, a spectator lobbed a neon green sex toy onto the fairway.
Security swiftly booted it into a bunker, retrieved the object, and removed it from the golf course.
This follows a spate of similarly coloured sex toys being hurled onto courts during WNBA matches, with one even striking Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham.
The initial WNBA incident took place on July 29 during a clash between the Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream.
Just days afterwards, a comparable episode occurred at a Dream fixture, this time away against the Chicago Sky.
In an exclusive chat with Mirror US, WNBA All-Star Kelsey Mitchell remarked: “We don’t know who those people are [the throwers]. We’re the product.
“We like to think that we come to play the gam,e and people want to see us play. I think it’s just that simple, and we can’t control everybody’s actions. To the person or people who think it’s cool, hats off to you.”
Mitchell continued: “To the higher power, I hope they keep praying for you, but for us, we want to keep the main thing the main thing, and I think that’s about the basketball for both teams.
“So to those fans who do disrespect us, I’d like to think that you guys, I hope to apologize sooner rather than later, but I think we’ve got to keep the main thing the main thing right now.”
A comparable incident took place during an NFL preseason match between the Minnesota Vikings and the Tennessee Titans, with a group linked to a crypto meme coin taking credit for the disruption.
Fleetwood, somewhat ironically, heaped praise on the spectators following his victory.
“[The fans] are amazing, it makes me a bit emotional. I’m so lucky with the support I get…it’s so special and I hope everyone knows how grateful I am for it,” he said.
“I’m just so happy that I got it done, I’m happy with my work ethic, and I’ll continue to try and get better and be the best that I can be.”
