The boss of Chapel Down has urged Rachel Reeves to put some fizz into the English sparkling wine industry at the Budget.
James Pennefather has called for the tipple to be covered by the existing Small Producer Relief to support the growing sector.
Under current rules, small producers pay a lower rate of alcohol duty on products with an alcohol by volume (ABV) of less than 8.5 per cent.

‘If the Chancellor was able to expand that and raise the ABV level to incorporate up to 12.5 per cent, then that would really benefit the English sparkling wine industry,’ Pennefather said.
He also told the Daily Mail he hoped Wednesday’s Budget would ‘give certainty to businesses and consumers’ after weeks of speculation over potential tax hikes.
