Unexplained flashes were captured on the moon’s surface by a Japanese astronomer, which led to everyone wondering who has potentially and unexpectedly visited the moon lately

Two unexplained flashes have been captured on the surface of the moon, and experts are split on what’s exactly happened in our solar system. The bright lights were first captured on October 30 by astronomer Daichi Fujii, curator of the Hiratsuka City Museum in Japan.

A sizeable round dot briefly lighted up the moon’s surface before it disappeared. After that, a second flash was spotted just days later on November 1, close to the moon’s horizon from Fujii’s perspective here on Earth.

The current theory is that these bright lights were caused by space rocks from the passing Taurid meteor shower. This isn’t surprising, given the meteor shower is expected every year at this time of year.

It happens when Earth travels through bits of dust and rock behind by the debris trail of the comet Encke. It creates spectacular sights of harmless shooting stars for us to enjoy.

According to Fujii, the moon has no atmosphere, so we can’t see meteors near the moon until they light up at the moment of impact and form a fiery crater. The astronomer added on X that the Taurid meteor shower was currently at its peak when he spotted the bright flashes on the moon, as per the Daily Mail.

He told Space.com: “With my 20cm telescope, I typically detect about one impact flash every few dozen hours of observation,’ he told Space.com.

“Because the thin crescent moon is visible only briefly and often low in the sky where thin clouds are common, I only observe a few dozen flashes per year.”

In another comment to the New York Times, he said: “I want the public to enjoy science.” The space rocks, which likely hit the moon, are believed to have been traveling at close to 60,000 mph.

It comes as an alien expert claims that an interstellar object which is seemingly an ” alien ship” with a “complex jet structure” and a “glowing halo” is passing by the sun.

The mysterious interstellar object, which has been dubbed 3I/ATLAS, was reportedly at 29 degrees separation from the Sun. Stacked images show a “large glowing halo extending out to half a million kilometres” with at least “7 distinct jets.” According to Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, some of them are anti-tails in the sunward direction.

In an article published by Loeb, he wrote: “This morning, at 4.10 Universal Time (UT) on November 8, 2025, the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS showed a complex jet structure. M. Jäger, G. Rhemann and E. Prosperi observed 3I/ATLAS at 29 degrees separation from the Sun in the sky.”

He added: “The stacked images, constituting 24 exposures in the green filter, each lasting 35 seconds , 2 exposures in a red filter and 2 exposures in a blue filter, show a large glowing halo extending out to half a million kilometers (5 arcminutes).

“The images show at least 7 distinct jets, some of which are anti-tails in the sunward direction.”
