M5 chaos as drivers face over hellish two hour delay and are urged to ‘steer clear’

The M5 near Bristol is seeing horror delays for motorists with reports suggesting some people may be stuck for two hours after flooding caused by Storm Claudia causes chaos

Drivers on the M5 near Bristol are in a hellish two hour delay today (November 14) after numerous incidents stopped traffic. These included a collision, an infrastructure issue and flooding that caused chaos on the motorway, leaving drivers stuck in long queues.

Two northbound lanes between junctions 20 and 19 have been closed this afternoon (Friday, November 14). National Highways has warned of significant delays and urges drivers to steer clear of the area if possible.

Highways said: “Traffic has been released on #M5 #Somerset northbound between J20 ( #Clevedon ) & J19 ( #Portishead ) following a collision.

“2 (of 3) lanes remain closed between J20 & J19 for an infrastructure defect. Service providers are in attendance. Please allow extra time for your journey.

“Severe delays of 140 minutes on approach, please allow extra time for your journey.”

Traffic monitor Inrix reports: “Severe delays and two lanes closed due to emergency repairs on M5 Northbound from J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way (Clevedon) to J19 A369 Martcombe Road ( Portishead ).

“Congestion to before J21 ( Weston Super Mare ). Delays aren’t helped after the road was briefly blocked for recovery of an accident which has now been cleared.”

There are also reports of flooding southbound on the motorway.

Inrix reports: “Queueing traffic and one lane closed due to flooding on M5 Southbound after J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead). Lane three (of three) is closed.”

The incident on the M5 comes after people travelling on the M4 this morning had delays caused by two separate crashes.

Two accidents occurred within 200 metres on the M4 Westbound around 7.30am this morning, reports WalesOnline.

Fire crews attended the scene and used hydraulic cutting equipment to free a person in the vehicle.

Shortly afterwards a call was received regarding a four vehicle crash 200 metres from the original incident. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service left the scene at 8.13am.

A spokesperson for the service said: “SWFRS received a call at approximately 07.28 am to reports of a RTC on the M4 Westbound, Junction 28 Tredegar Park to Junction 29 Castleton.

“Crews and appliances from Duffryn, Roath and Malpas stations attended and used hydraulic cutting equipment to free a person in the vehicle. The crews subsequently cleared the area.

“Police and the ambulance service were also in attendance. Shortly afterwards, at a call was received regarding a RTC involving four cars within 200 metres of the initial call and the crews and appliances who were on-scene, cleared the carriageway, using Gojacks. The stop message was given at 08.13 am.”
