Last week’s brass monkeys weather will be followed up by another blast of chilly air from Iceland which will see the country colder than parts of Scandinavia this week

Freezing Britain will be colder than Sweden this week. A new 400 mile-wide -7C Icelandic shiver is expected to hit the UK bringing more snow and ice. It comes after last week’s widespread flurries and the -12.6C coldest November temperatures for 15 years.

But cold air from Iceland will bring more snow showers from today (Monday), mainly in the North. BBC Weather has forecast UK highs falling again to a bitter 5-8C – and feeling like 2-5C in windchill – from today until Wednesday. And it will be bitterly cold at night with -7C nights expected in the North and even -3C in the South – colder than -2C in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm.

They said that today will “be breezy with colder northerly winds setting in, bringing showers, some wintry”. Widespread frost is expected to blanket the country, with ice for parts.

Sky’s weather presenter Jo Wheeler said: “It’s a quick change back to a chilly northerly flow after brief milder westerlies at the weekend.”

Washouts will hit from Thursday as highs climb to 11-13C, but the weekend will again see the North face snow flurries.

A Met Office forecaster said: “It looks like a return to wetter and milder conditions by the end of the week.

“But temperatures may turn colder as northerly winds return, with potential for snow showers in northern areas.”

Water companies are braced for a burst pipes callouts spike after the weekend thaw saw deluges and floods.

Martin Pipe, Bournemouth Water’s customer leakage manager, said: “Our teams are working hard around the clock to keep the taps flowing after burst pipes.”

Meanwhile, a Netweather map shows the chilliest spot in the UK will be the Scottish Highlands, where temperatures could plummet to as low as -6C by Tuesday lunchtime.

The nearest major city to this frosty area is Inverness, where minimum temperatures are predicted to hover around a chilly -4 to -5C.

In Wales, the coldest temperatures are set to be in the Snowdonia mountains (-1 to -2C), but nearby towns and cities are also likely to feel the chill. Bangor and Newtown face lows of -1C and Wrexham and St Asaph with 0-1C, reports the Mirror.

Major cities like Cardiff and Swansea will experience slightly milder temperatures, around 5-7C, according to the NetWeather map.

The chilliest parts of England were forecast to be the Pennines, the Midlands, and the northern interior, with temperatures dropping as low as -1C. Sheffield is expected to shiver at around 0 to -1C, while Leeds and Stoke-on-Trent will hover around 1C.
